The Muskeg River Mine and the Scotford Upgrader together comprise the Athabasca Oil Sands Project - a joint venture among Shell Canada Limited(60%), Chevron Canada (a wholly owned subsidiary of Chevron Corp.) (20%) and Marathon Oil Canada Corporation (20%).

The Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) consists of two main components:

• The Muskeg River Mine located 75 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.
• The Scotford Updgrader, beside Shell's Scotford Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada.

The Scotford Upgrader uses hydrogen-addition technology to process the bitumen from the Muskeg River Mine into low sulphur synthetic crude oils. These synthetic crude oils are sold to Shell's Scotford and Sarnia refineries, and ChevronTexaco's Salt Lake and Burnaby refineries. The balance will be sold to other refiners.

As well, a number of companies have constructed new facilities primarily to serve the needs of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project under long-term commercial agreements.

• The Corridor Pipeline transports diluted bitumen from the Muskeg River Mine to the Scotford Upgrader and connects the Upgrader with refinery and pipeline terminals in the Edmonton area. Corridor Pipeline Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of BC Gas Inc. Corridor Pipeline will draw upon another wholly owned subsidiary of BC Gas Inc., Trans Mountain Pipe Line Company Ltd. for operational expertise.
• ATCO Power Canada Limited constructed natural gas fired cogeneration plants at both the Muskeg River Mine and the Scotford Upgrader which provide heat and electricity. Additional electricity not used on side will be sold into the power market and available for other customers.
• The ATCO Pipelines natural gas pipeline supplies the natural gas needs of the ATCO Muskeg River Mine cogeneration plant.
