Albian Sands Announces Operator Agreement

(Fort McMurray, Alberta) – Albian Sands Energy today announced that effective January 1, 2009 it will operate under the flagship name Shell Albian Sands.

Albian Sands team members will become Shell employees January 1, 2010.

“We have long been one business and one team with the Scotford Upgrader in producing energy for Canadians,” said John Rhind, Albian Sands Energy's Chief Operating Officer. “We will soon be working as one company.

“ We look forward to participating in Shell's learning and development programs as well as leveraging its global technical expertise and brand recognition to benefit our business here in Fort McMurray.”

Albian Sands Energy currently operates the Muskeg River Mine and Jackpine Mine on behalf of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP), a joint venture among Shell Canada Energy (60%), Chevron Canada Limited (20%) and Marathon Oil Sands L.P. (20%). Under an agreement among the AOSP joint venture owners, Shell Canada Energy will become the Mine operator, with Albian Sands facilities becoming Shell Albian Sands facilities January 1, 2009. Shell already operates the Scotford Upgrader for the AOSP joint venture.

AOSP joint venture ownership is not affected.

Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP)

The AOSP is a joint venture among Shell Canada Energy (60%), Chevron Canada Limited (20%) and Marathon Oil Sands L.P. (20%) and consists of the Muskeg River Mine and Jackpine Mine located north of Fort McMurray, Alberta and the Scotford Upgrader located east of Edmonton.

The AOSP's Muskeg River Mine and Scotford Upgrader have a capacity of 155,000 barrels per day, an amount equivalent to 10 per cent of Canada oil needs.

The majority of crude oil from the AOSP is refined into consumer products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel at Shell's Scotford Refinery near Edmonton and sold in the Western Canadian marketplace.

Albian Sands Energy Inc.

Albian Sands Energy Inc. is a company owned by the AOSP joint venture owners. It operates the Muskeg River Mine River Mine and is constructing the Jackpine Mine, both located 75 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Albian Sands mines for oil in the oil sands of northern Alberta. In oil sands mining, a mix of oil and sand is removed from just below the surface using shovels and trucks. This material is mixed with warm water to separate the oil from the sand.

The Muskeg River Mine has a capacity of 155,000 barrels per day (bpd) of bitumen, a naturally occurring thick oil comprised mainly of hydrocarbons, which it produces for the Athabasca Oil Sands Project joint venture owners – Shell, Chevron and Marathon. Albian Sands' product, diluted bitumen, is upgraded at the Scotford Upgrader near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and provide refiners with transport fuel feedstock.

Albian Sands employs approximately 1,500 employees and contractors.
